The wounds of 9/11 were still so raw, but the Iraq War was just beginning.
It was the third anniversary of the attacks. We were dressed as a 9/11 victim, a U.S. soldier, and an Iraqi civilian. For the performance, we stood still, side-by-side, looked down and cried. Soon, a crowd of observers gathered. Cops confronted us, mixed on how to respond to us. A man in the audience raised his voice and pointed at Sara—the Iraqi civilian, “You come down here in your burka!!”. Kelly—the U.S. soldier explained calmly, “More people are being killed”. Another man in the audience came up to us and said, “I am a victim of 9/11 and I think you should stay”, and started making phone calls. We opted to move the performance across the street to keep a day of mourning, peaceful.
Three years later, our 9/11 performance evolved into the Triiibe collaboration Inch by Inch.
